Weak (Soft) Teeth

Weak or soft teeth: understanding MIH

Some children have teeth that are weaker or softer than usual. This may be caused by molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH), a condition affecting the development of tooth enamel.

Symptoms

MIH may cause:

  • Creamy white, yellow or brown patches on the teeth
  • Rough, crumbly or easily damaged enamel
  • Tooth sensitivity or discomfort
  • Pain when eating or drinking hot, cold or sweet foods
  • Discomfort when brushing
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • An increased risk of tooth decay
  • Avoiding brushing or certain foods because of sensitivity

MIH usually affects the first permanent molars, which come through at around six years of age. The front adult teeth may also be affected.

Causes

  • MIH occurs when the enamel does not develop as strongly as it should.
  • The exact cause is not always known.
  • It is not caused by poor brushing or eating too much sugar.
  • It is not something you or your child has done wrong.
  • Weaker enamel can be harder to keep clean and may break down more quickly, increasing the risk of decay.

Treatment and prevention

Early assessment helps us check the strength and condition of the affected teeth and plan appropriate care. Treatment may include:

  • Fluoride varnish to strengthen the enamel
  • Protective sealants to shield vulnerable areas
  • Fillings for teeth affected by damage or decay
  • Advice on brushing and suitable toothpaste
  • Dietary guidance to reduce the risk of decay
  • Regular monitoring as your child grows
  • More extensive treatment if the teeth are severely affected

We can also recommend ways to manage sensitivity and keep your child comfortable.

When to seek advice

Please contact us if your child:

  • Has unusually sensitive teeth
  • Complains of discomfort when eating or drinking
  • Avoids brushing
  • Has white, yellow or brown patches on their adult teeth
  • Has teeth that chip, crumble or appear damaged

The earlier MIH is identified, the more effectively we can protect your child's teeth and help keep them comfortable.
