Treatments

Specialist dental care for children, delivered with patience and expertise.

Looking at the whole picture

Every child is different, and their dental care should reflect that. We look at the whole picture when assessing your child – not simply the individual tooth that may be causing concern.

We take into account your child’s previous dental history, current oral health, age and stage of dental development, the eruption of their permanent teeth and their developing bite. We also consider any emerging orthodontic concerns, as treatment at one stage of development can sometimes influence what happens later.

Our aim is to provide the right treatment at the right time, using the most appropriate and conservative approach for each child, while keeping their long-term oral health and developing smile in mind.

Dental examinations

Regular dental examinations allow us to monitor your child’s teeth and development over time and identify problems at an early stage.

During an examination, we assess:

  • The health of the teeth and gums
  • Existing and developing tooth decay as well as any existing restorations
  • Oral hygiene and dietary factors
  • The development of the dentition, eruption, position and alignment of the teeth

Where appropriate, dental X-rays may be recommended to assess areas that cannot be fully examined clinically, such as developing permanent teeth, hidden decay or the position of unerupted teeth.

By following your child’s dental development over time, we can identify concerns early and plan treatment when it is most appropriate.

Preventative care

Prevention is at the heart of paediatric dentistry. We aim to help children maintain healthy teeth and develop good habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Depending on your child’s individual needs, preventative care may include personalised advice on brushing and fluoride toothpaste, dietary guidance, fluoride treatments, fissure sealants and regular monitoring.

We also assess your child’s individual risk of dental decay and work with parents to develop practical strategies to protect their teeth.

Restorative Dental Treatment

Our aim is to restore and protect your child’s teeth, relieving discomfort, preventing further decay and maintaining healthy smiles as they grow.

‍

We offer a range of restorative treatments tailored to your child’s individual needs, depending on the extent of tooth decay and the condition of the affected tooth.

White fillings

For smaller cavities, we use tooth-coloured white fillings to restore the tooth. These blend naturally with your child’s smile while repairing the damaged area and preventing further decay.

Dental Crowns – Silver or Aesthetic

When tooth decay is more extensive and a filling is no longer sufficient, a dental crown may be recommended. Crowns cover and protect the remaining tooth structure and are designed to remain in place until the baby tooth is naturally lost.

They can be particularly valuable when a tooth needs to be maintained for several years, helping to preserve its function and the space required for the developing permanent teeth. Depending on your child's needs and the location of the tooth, different types of crowns may be recommended:

  • Silver crowns: Strong and durable stainless-steel crowns, commonly used on children's back teeth.
  • Aesthetic crowns: Tooth-coloured crowns designed to provide a more natural appearance.

Pulp Treatment (Nerve Treatment)

If decay extends deep into the tooth and affects the nerve (pulp), pulp treatment may be necessary to preserve the tooth and avoid extraction where possible. The aim is to remove the affected tissue, treat the infection or inflammation and maintain the tooth until it naturally falls out.

Extractions & Space Maintainers

There are occasions when a tooth cannot be predictably restored and extraction is the best option. A tooth may also need to be removed for developmental or orthodontic reasons.

Where necessary, we will also consider whether the space needs to be maintained.

Whether one is needed depends on several factors, including which tooth has been lost, your child’s age, the development and position of the permanent tooth and the overall development of the bite.

Planning for your child’s future dental health

Paediatric dentistry is about more than treating the problem in front of us today.

Children’s mouths are constantly changing as they grow, and decisions made during childhood can have an impact on their future dental health.

For this reason, we consider your child’s complete dental history, current oral health, previous treatment, dental development and developing orthodontic situation when planning their care.

We monitor the eruption and position of the permanent teeth and the development of the bite, and where appropriate may recommend orthodontic assessment or work together with an orthodontist.

Our goal is to provide treatment that addresses your child’s immediate needs while supporting their long-term oral health, function and developing smile.
